Memorial Day in the UK 2018
How you can mark US Memorial Day (May 28) in Britain

2018 marks 150 years since the first Memorial Day took place. Although the occasion was marked among service personnel before 1868, it was the famous General Order 11, issued by General John A. Logan, which organized a nationwide commemoration of Memorial Day, then known as Decoration Day. Although the day was originally observed on May 30, in 1968 Congress moved Memorial Day to the last Monday of each May. This year, that day is Monday May 28th, which is also a Bank Holiday in the UK.

The two American cemeteries in the UK, Brookwood in Surrey and Madingley in Cambridge, will be holding memorial day events. Brookwood's ceremony will take place on Sunday May 27, whilst Cambridge's event will take place on Monday May 28. With 2018 marking 100 years since the conclusion of the First World War, both ceremonies will be particularly poignant, and are expected to be well attended. Details on both ceremonies can be found below.

If you aren't able to attend either ceremony, there are other memorials in the UK to the American troops. The ABMC (American Battle Monuments Commission) unveiled a new memorial in Dartmouth, near Torquay, in 2017, whilst the American Memorial Chapel in London's St Paul's Cathedral is also marking its own 60th anniversary this year. There is also a notable memorial to American forces on the seafront in Weymouth, Dorset. Other monuments to US troops can be found across the UK.
