Americans Give Pasty Competitors a Pasting
American Pasty makers, Pure Pasty Co, won one of the big prizes at this year's World Pasty Championships, held at the Eden Project in Cornwall, UK

The annual World Pasty Championships, held in the home of the pasty, Cornwall, at the Eden Project, took place Saturday March 3rd, and one of the big winners was a pasty firm from the State of Virginia.

Cheshire, UK born Mike 'The Pasty' Burgess opened Pure Pasty Co. in Vienna, Virginia, in 2010. His American take on the pasty - A Chicken BBQ pasty made with sweet potato, zucchini, red pepper, corn and pineapple, was victorious in the Open Savoury Company category. He accepted the award in Cornwall along with his bakery manager, Jennifer Swanston, originally from New York.

Talking after the victory, Mike said "We are ecstatic with the win – over the moon. The winning pasty is a real team effort – an American fusion." Jennifer added "What a few days! I’ve seen a rare Cornish snowstorm, been to the Eden Project Biomes and now we have won a World Pasty Championships trophy to take home with us. It’s absolutely surprising and fantastic".

Mike and Jennifer weren't North America's only representatives either, with competitors also from Ontario and Ottawa, Canada.

Competitors braved the British snowstorms to attend the event, with this year's World Pasty Championships featuring more than 200 entries, the highest number in the competition's history. Proving the US are not patsies at making pasties, Mike and Jennifer will return to Virginia where they serve their American take on a British classic in the Washington DC Suburbs.
