The US Embassy in London recently confirmed it is operating a limited appointment system for emergency US passport renewals required within 10 days. If you need to travel within 10 days but have found your passport has expired, you should contact the Embassy immediately, particularly due to the limited number of appointments available.
When you get to the Embassy, there are some simple guidelines and airport-style security in place to ensure the safety of you and staff.
1) Wear a Mask - Anyone aged 11 of over should wear a mask. This can be a purchased mask or one you've made yourself.
2) Travel light - When visiting the Embassy, laptops and cabin-sized bags are not permitted, and no storage facilities are available, so keep the belongings you have on you to a minimum.
3) Don't attend if you have Covid-19 symptoms - If you have been exposed to the virus, or if you have any symptoms relating to the virus, reply to your appointment e-mail to postpone your appointment
4) Take note of 14 day UK quarantine rules - If you have been in the USA in the past 14 days, remember that there's a two week quarantine in place for international arrivals to the UK, so don't schedule an appointment with the Embassy during this two week window. Also keep a note of other overseas locations aside from the US, where recent visitors are expected to quarantine when arriving in the UK.
If in doubt, or if you have any questions, take a look at the US Embassy's website, uk.usembassy.gov/information-for-american-citizens-following-the-coronavirus-covid-19-outbreak, which is updated regularly with new information.
