Last week, on September 6, the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath hosted the 33rd Retiree Appreciation Day. The day is an annual event set aside to honor US military who served, and to offer information and advice from specialist support organizations.
During the day, retirees attended a social, luncheon, and an information fair. Retirees were also given a demonstration of weapons loading, and were shown an F-15E Strike Eagle and CV-22 Osprey from the 352nd Special Operations Wing.
Darrell Russell, Retiree Activities Office director for RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall, explained that the day "gives back to the retiree community and keeps that military connection ... The retiree community consists of not only the retirees but their spouses, widows, and dependents ... We receive many calls from widows and retirees who want help with the US tax system and guidance about how to receive social security benefits while being overseas."
The Air Force Retiree Activities Program is an official program which connects with Air Force retirees, including those in the UK, allowing them to engage in an active retirement community, keep up to date with Air Force news, stay informed on their status and receive support on issues relating to medical, legal and financial matters.
