THE TRANSATLANTIC MAGAZINE
The week commencing October 3 is Absentee Voting Week. Overseas Americans have the vote - it can make a difference to who represents you in the US and if you don't use it you can't really complain about how the US government treats expats.
Kayla Paulson, Voting Assistance Ambassador for the non-partisan Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), advises that absentee ballots for overseas Americans were sent out on September 24th, so the FVAP is recommending that voters overseas return their ballots as soon as possible.
Have you received yours? It's not too late to request yours, but deadlines to register are as early as October 5th for some states – each state has its own rules and regs for voting.
There are some postal mail strikes in the UK planned for the months of October and November. You can register and request your absentee ballot, and find out how to return your ballot back to the US at www.fvap.gov.
If you requested your absentee ballot prior to September 24th and still haven't received it, you can vote using the FWAB back-up ballot, which you can start here: www.fvap.gov/fwab-privacy-notice, it will count as a normal ballot would for any state.
You can follow FVAP London on social media for updates and to ask any voting related questions.
FVAP will be having Virtual Office Hours on Zoom, to assist voters in the UK and across the world with their questions about voting from abroad. The Zoom Office Hours will be open to all with a 1-to-1 set-up and a moderator for the event using zoomgov.com.
