An American chef in London, Victory Garvey, has been awarded a 2021 Michelin star for his restaurant's Californian cuisine.
SOLA Soho was one of 17 new recipients of a star in the Michelin guide's 2021 edition. Garvey was born to a French-Spanish mother and an American father. Having spent time working in Spain and the US, he moved to the UK in 2015 and opened SOLA in early 2020.
A playful take on the phrase "So LA", the restaurant offers a modern, fine dining take on Californian cooking.
Responding to the restaurant's first Michelin star, Garvey said that "I'm absolutely blown away by SOLA's having won a Michelin star, all the moreso because it has come at such a difficult time for us and the entire restaurant industry."
Garvey added that "The star is for the restaurant, not me alone, and as such is fantastic recognition for the teams both in the kitchen and front of house for their incredibly hard work and commitment to the highest standards. It's also great timing that we just launched SOLA At Home, as it means guests won't have to wait until we reopen to try our food!"
Like many restaurants, SOLA has been forced to close during lockdown, but has recently launched an at home service that allows fine-diners to order food that they can cook and prepare at home.
