A UK historian based in Nottingham is crowdfunding a new World War II memorial to be placed in the Nottinghamshire village of Owthorpe, to commemorate its use by the 82nd Airborne Division prior to the Normandy invasion.
Two US paratroopers were killed here during two separate training accidents. One was a Private, Jake T Quisenberry I/507th killed March 27th 1944. The other trooper was Thomas McGinley D/508th killed April 13th 1944. Both men were killed when their parachutes failed during practice jump training exercises.
This memorial will be a lasting legacy to that brave generation of men and women that went above and beyond.
Darren Bond, the man behind the project, says: “Jake and Thomas, who were sadly killed preparing for the invasion of Europe, must be remembered! The history books are full of stories of brave men killed in combat, and rightly so. But the men killed before action, during training, should also be honored.
“Any donations to this memorial will be grateful received. Every pound or dollar gets us nearer the final goal. The idea is to unveil this memorial on the 13th of April 2024 to make the 80th Anniversary of Thomas McGinley’s death.”
