The Department of State is making their new online passport renewal system fully available to the public today, which they say represents a significant step forward in ensuring that Americans can more easily access passport services, instead of printing a paper application and mailing it with a check. This rollout follows a pilot program, and currently only applies to adult passports that have expired. The cost will remain the same as the current mailed-in method.
However this online process will not be available to US citizens living overseas. In an online press conference, replying to a question, Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Rena Bitter said, "You have to have a US address at this point to use the service, so people abroad are not going to be able to use it right now. I don’t know if that’s going to expand into the future. We’ll have to see."
