The London Warriors, one of the leading American Football teams in the United Kingdom, have announced that the Cherry Red Records Stadium in Wimbledon, London will be the venue for their first-ever American Football League Europe (AFLE) home game. The Warriors will welcome the Poland team, Panthers Wroclaw, to the capital this coming Sunday, May 24, in what will be a historic occasion for both the organization and British American football.
The Warriors were recently announced as a part of a brand-new professional league, the AFLE. This new competition sees eight teams from across the continent battle it out over the coming summer. The league was formally announced in early December of last year as a rival to various preexisting leagues across Europe. It would be a mixture of established clubs and expansion teams. Representatives from Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Austria, France and Italy make up the rest of the league. London was the last of the eight teams to be announced earlier this year, and just a few weeks ago, it was announced that the Warriors would be the team representing England.
The Cherry Red Records Stadium is home to AFC Wimbledon, who play in League One of the English soccer pyramid. The stadium was built on the site of the former Wimbledon Stadium, which, over the years, hosted greyhound racing and speedway as well as other sports. The new facility opened in 2020, representing an 18-year journey for the club to return to the area after many nomadic years away. The stadium has a current capacity of approximately 9,000 spectators with the potential to expand to 20,000. It is not unaccustomed to ground sharing as they also host the London Broncos rugby league team.
For the Warriors, playing their first-ever AFLE home game at the Cherry Red Records Stadium is a huge step. They bring American football, a staple for fans of the NFL, to a venue steeped in sporting tradition, giving fans in the capital a memorable and accessible location to experience the AFLE, and perhaps live gridiron, for the first time.
Tickets for the Week One encounter – the season runs for 14 weeks – are available now.
