THE TRANSATLANTIC MAGAZINE
I've been raving about London's canals since I discovered them during lockdown. The stretch where Bruno's is moored near Angel tube is particularly magical at night. For a romantic drink or 3, you could hardly do better!
Bruno's is the fraternal twin of Caravel, the barge restaurant of brothers Fin and Lorcan Spiteri. Like its sister, the ambience is delightful. There is lounge seating and high tables with stools. The retro music was right up my alley and so was the make-me-look-younger lighting! It's not THAT dark!
I reviewed Caravel last year and the food is fantastic. It's disappointing the bar food at Bruno's doesn't live up to the Spiteri standard. 2 snack trays: meat and cheese (£12) and veg and pickle (£9) were served in vacuum sealed plastic and took up most of our tiny cocktail table. When we ripped off the film, I was reminded of eating on a plane, terrified of knocking something over. The quality was decent, but it was awkward and clumsy.
Cocktails however are reasonably priced, inventive and very tasty. Blood orange, bourbon, lemon and Aperol (£12) was super refreshing. Mezcal, smoked lime juice and Orgeat (£11) was fav of the day; the smoke a stroke of genius. A thermos of hot buttered rum (£16) was the perfect drink to fortify me for the winter walk home. Next time I pop in for a drink, I'll head straight to Caravel afterwards for dinner!
