THE TRANSATLANTIC MAGAZINE
Friday evening just before 9. There I was, having my usual lockdown lollygag when the doorbell chimed. I thought, "jeepers-creepers, who can that be?" Holy-moley, it was my ready to drink cocktails from Funkidory!
When the pandemic hit, owners Sergio Leanza and Anna Fairhead turned their funk and cocktail hotspot into a bottle and vinyl shop lickety-split. Now they are delivering nationwide so wherever you are, if you're feeling a little whiskey-frisky, don't dilly-dally. Now, let's get down to the nitty-gritty.
I got to sample 3 cocktails. They came beautifully packaged with a sweet note, advising me to pop them, along with my glass, into the freezer for an hour before drinking. Open. Pour. Drink. How easy-peasy is that?
First, an oolong martini with London dry gin, fino sherry and Waikato oolong from New Zealand (£20/250 ml). This is an excellent martini though I never quite found the oolong. At 29% ABV it also packs a punch! The sherry, a wonderful change from vermouth, added just a hint of salinity so halfway through I got dirty and added an olive. Perfect!
A Persian daiquiri (£18) is a very sweet treat with Cuban rum, saffron liqueur and rose petals. The perfume is amazing but as a cocktail, it needed acid. I imagined drinking it instead with an exotic fruit dessert.
Rye Lane (£18) combines rye with dry Vermouth, fennel seed and Giarraffa olive. The fennel doesn't shine through but there is a lovely play between sweet and savory in this drink. It's very seldom I drink rye and it's a lovely whiskey. I wondered if this was Peckham Rye!?
There is also an espresso martini, negroni and old fashioned on offer and all cocktails also come in 500 ml.
So if you're an itsy-bitsy bored with your usual tipple, Funkidory is a handy-dandy alternative for getting tipsy-turvy!
