Morty and Bob's
Morty and Bob's Morty & Bob's grilled cheese – yes please!

If you, like me, are an American of a certain age and have experienced sudden cravings for a grilled cheese sandwich, Morty & Bob's is the answer to your cheesy DTs. And it ain't Wonder Bread and pre-wrapped slices of orange plastic!

What began as a grilled cheese food stall in East London has blossomed into three brick and mortar shops with the flagship in Coal Drops Yard. (Morty and Bob are the grandfathers of the founder, Charlie. Bob was a fruit and veg buyer at Old Spitalfields Market and Morty owned a restaurant in downtown Montreal.) The neo-warehouse style is done up beautifully with exposed brick, birch banquettes, high, low and lounge seating and light. It's a very inviting space.

The menu has comfort written all over it. There is something for every hour of the day and with a full bar and great selection of hot and cold drinks, all bases are covered. Service is charming and spot on.

The straight up grilled cheese (£9) was just about perfect. Crunchy, buttery, oozy… the addition of chopped onions added a nice kick and a big dill pickle brought it all home. For another £2.50 you can add pastrami and mustard to the mix. This was my favorite!

Cheese and mushroom croquettes with mint yogurt (£8) were tasty, crunchy outside and soft in the middle. Excellent. Moreish Parmesan and truffle fries were supposed to end our carb orgy but the chef insisted we try the French toast (£9). God love him! It is superb. Light, fluffy brioche with a cinnamon caramel and berry compote.

Comfort food of the highest caliber!
