It brings together the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Cassiano dal Pozzo, Alexander Marshal, Maria Sibylla Merian and Mark Catesby – diverse figures who shared a passion for enquiry and a fascination with the beautiful and bizarre in nature. All lived at a time when new species were being discovered around the world in ever increasing numbers. Mark Catesby, a naturalist from Suffolk, visited his sister in Williamsburg, Virginia in the C18th where he began to draw animals and plants. Between 1729 and 1747 he published his studies as The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Island, the first in a series of books on the natural history of North America. www.royalcollection.org.uk March 14, 2008 to September 28, 2008 Ancient trucks and buses Crich Tramway Village, Crich, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 5DP One of the most important historic transport attractions in the UK. This year has a special event to celebrate the history of Leyland Motors, once the world's fifth largest producer of trucks and buses on July 13. From 1723 until his death in 1759 he lived at this house, just off Bond Street, now the Handel House Museum. This year the museum holds an exhibition that reveals the public and private lives of the first great women opera singers — the superstar celebrities of the day. Handel and the Divas will look at the careers, rivalries, successes, failures and stories of scandalous behind–the–scenes behavior that made the first divas the talk of 18th–century London. www.handelhouse.org +44 (0)20 7495 1685 April 30, 2008 to November 16, 2008 Well–dressed wells Peak District and Derbyshire Villages and towns in the area revive the ancient ceremony and craft of well dressing. Well dressings are mosaic pictures made from natural materials such as flower petals, leaves and berries displayed on the site of a well. The art of well dressing may have originated in Pagan times as a ritual to give thanks for the supply of fresh water, or have been introduced into Britain by the Romans, or be connected with the plague. The Quilt Museum and Gallery will be the national headquarters of the Quilters' Guild of the British Isles and its Heritage Collection. 600 quilts include a signed and dated 1718 patchwork coverlet, miniature pieces, quilted clothing, tools and equipment. Born in 1928 in Lexington Virginia, Twombly studied in Boston, New York and Black Mountain College, Carolina. Afrika! The Trafford Centre, Manchester After a run in London to the end of May, this spectacular and exuberant show is going to the North of England. More than just a show, it is an experience, from beautiful Moorish tents and Moroccan style cafes to authentic African arts and crafts and African food, the audience is given a glimpse of the heart of Africa from the moment they step through the door. An important part of AFRIKA! During Summer Recess the Palace offers guided tours, taking in the House of Lords, the House of Commons and State Rooms. Inanimate objects are brought to life by athletic dancers and an imaginative production, cold metal tubes are turned into living creatures. He was a master draftsman whose vision was uniquely detailed and quite unlike anyone else's.
