Francis Albemar McDougal served with Company E, 111th Pennsylvania Volunteers. He saw action at Wauhatchie, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and Ringgold Gap, was wounded in action, and died in 1907.
That sounds like an unremarkable story, were it not for one thing. Francis Albemar McDougal died in Southwark, South London and he was a Briton.
Although they are a nearly unknown group, more than 50,000 Brits served in the American Civil War, for both the North and the South and in various capacities. A group called Monuments for UK Veterans of the American Civil War Association are determined that they will not remain forgotten.
The Association has secured, from the US government's Department of Veterans Affairs, an American Civil War veteran burial marker. A dedication ceremony to officially unveil the burial marker will be held on Saturday April 29, at 11:30am (for 12pm start) at Manor Park Cemetery, Sebert Road, London E7 0NP, close to Manor Park underground station.
If you wish to attend the ceremony, or find out more about the Monuments for UK Veterans of the American Civil War Association, email civilwarukmonumentalproject@gmail.com
The association is also raising £2,000 to fund a single Monument for Veterans of the American Civil War, buried in the United Kingdom. To help them prevent these brave souls from being forgotten by history, go to https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/themonumentalproject
