On Monday The American previewed the English Football League One clash between Birmingham City and Wrexham. It was a game between two teams that are among the favorites for promotion to the second tier of the football pyramid, the Championship. The reason for highlighting this somewhat otherwise normal game of soccer was due to the involvement of two high profile former NFL Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, Tom Brady and Eli Manning.
Manning showed bravado before the game as he had been heralded as a club ambassador for Wrexham. The owners of the Welsh club, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, with their typical wind-up humor, had reached out to the former New York Giants star, who immediately took to his task by trying to rile up Brady, a minority owner at the Midlands club.
The two have history of course with Manning stopping Brady, when he was at the New England Patriots, from recording only the second perfect season in NFL history. Eli boasted in an X post that he would now beat him at the round ball version of football too.
Well, this time it was Brady who had the last laugh when the Blues ran out comfortable 3-1 winners, despite going behind in the opening three minutes. The result puts the two clubs in the top two places in the division, with Wrexham in top position due to a better goal difference after 6 games. However Brady’s Birmingham has played a game less. This could well be a battle to watch through the season.
Showing his influence and star power, Brady had invited another sporting superstar to the game and was seen in the stands throughout with David Beckham. The former Manchester United and England captain has created such an image in the United States after a short spell in the MLS and is now part owner of the Inter Miami franchise that has Lionel Messi as its star player.
Brady has since revealed that he had some eye-opening moments as the vociferous crowd in attendance used some choice language in their support. Beckham had to explain some of the meaning behind the chanting.
Taking to social media after the game Brady posted a picture of the pair grinning after full-time, with a caption that read: "What a night in BIRMINGHAM, Thanks for teaching me how to sing at a football match @davidbeckham, can't repeat most of what was said [laughing emoji]."
