NEWS Titanic Life Jacket At American Museum in Britain One of the few documented life jackets from the Titanic will be on display at The American Museum in Britain until October 12th only as part of its exhibition: TITANIC — The Ship That Shook America. Largely intact but considerably marked by the events of that dark night in 1912, this evocative and emotive piece of the Titanic story has been displayed in several major exhibitions in North America. This life jacket — made up of compartments filled with cork bricks — was found by Robert Edwards, the Quartermaster of the Mackay Bennett, a steamer commissioned to recover the dead from the Titanic’s debris field. Archival film footage of Titanic survivors wearing these cork life jackets is also featured in this acclaimed exhibition, along with shots of the Mackay Bennett on its outward voyage — its decks stacked high with wooden coffins. "Seeing this life jacket really punches home the horror of the Titanic tragedy – something too readily forgotten," says curator, Laura Beresford. "Every one of those statistics represents a life lost that was as full as our own. Most visitors will, I think, imagine themselves as the person in this life jacket, lost on the water and in the darkness." The exhibition Titanic — The Ship That Shook America closes to the public on 2nd November. Opening Times 15 March to 2 November: Tuesday to Sunday, from 12.00 noon until 5.00pm (last entry 4pm). Closed Mondays except Bank Holidays and during August. Admission Museum, Grounds and Galleries: Adults £7.50, Senior Citizens/Students £6.50, Children £4.00 Grounds and Galleries only: Adults £5.00, Senior Citizens/Students £4.00, Children £3.00 The American Museum in Britain Claverton Manor, Bath BA2 7BD Tel 01225 460503 Fax 01225 469160 info@americanmuseum.org www.americanmuseum.org |
