NEWS Closure of UK Airspace due to Volcanic Ash The US Embassy in London has released the following advice: Americans affected by the closure of UK airspace should monitor local media reports and relevant airport and airline websites for information. If you are at a UK airport or hotel and need assistance, contact airline, airport, hotel, or police officials onsite. If you need help refilling a U.S. prescription or with other ongoing medical issues exacerbated by the flight disruption then airport, airline, or hotel personnel should be able to contact a doctor or other medical professional on your behalf. The Embassy also has this list of independent medical facilities which may be able to help. The number for emergency services in England and Wales is 999. Call this number if you are in need of emergency medical assistance. The Embassy also maintains lists of doctors and medical specialists on its website at http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/scs/index.html The UK Border Agency (UKBA) will NOT penalize stranded travellers who overstay on their visa: "The UK Border Agency would like to reassure travellers who have been unable to leave the UK and whose visas have now expired. We appreciate that this is due to exceptional circumstances beyond your control. Please ensure that you retain proof of planned travel that would have enabled you to leave the UK before your visa expired. Please only contact the agency for further advice in exceptional circumstances. We will update this advice as the situation develops." If you need financial assistance, you should consider contacting family and friends either in the United Kingdom or the United States, to see if they can book a hotel for you or wire funds. For information on wiring funds, see the Embassy's website for money transfer services through Western Union.
