THE TRANSATLANTIC MAGAZINE
Dearest Gentle Reader,
It's been said that there's to be a new Lady Whistledown in Mayfair, although it will prove difficult to replace the original: Penelope Featherington, a wallflower friend of the Bridgertons, used her wit and wisdom to inform and scandalize London's upper class. Ultimately, she married the third Bridgerton son, proving that looks alone don't make a lady ... although she is, indeed, quite lovely.
So, whose quill it be that sets the ton a twitter and indulges the queen in her insatiable taste for gossip?
☆ Could it be Eloise Bridgerton, who's sworn to be the spinster sister? A sharp and outspoken observer, she challenges rigid social expectations of the Regency era, preferring intellectual pursuits and freedom, rather than seeking a husband in the "marriage mart."
☆ Or, perhaps, it's the young widow Francesca Bridgerton, whose husband, John Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin, died after complaining of a headache? This may be a turning point for her.
☆ Speaking of the Earl, let's also consider Michaela Stirling, his sassy cousin, whose life (one suspects) may intersect with Francesca's.
☆ And let's not forget Queen Charlotte's new lady-in-waiting, Alice Mondrich. Because of her direct access to the Queen and her talent for manipulating politics, she must be considered a prime suspect for this new identity, too.
If this writer were a gambling man, faithful fans, his wager would be on someone else: Lady Bridgerton herself.
After all, who is better situated (or suited, some would say) to divulge the intimate foibles and intimate indiscretions of the ton?
